My Swimwear Collection with PQ!

If you’ve followed, stalked or even just stumbled upon my Instagram profile by accident, you’ve probably noticed that I’m wearing a bikini like 60-80% of the time, that is, whenever and wherever acceptable.

When I look back at my online career, it almost feels like swimwear is entangled in my dna in a sense. Rewinding back before 1.6 million Instagram followers, back to high school when my online presence wasn’t much beyond my personal Tumblr blog, I can vividly remember saving up to purchase my first designer bikini. I was so completely unaware of the role that moment would play in leading me to where I am right now, writing this blog post about my own swimwear collection.

The story is that I got the size wrong on that first bikini. Anyone remember Triangl Swimwear? Triangl, btw, is still a super successful swimwear brand, but I’m talking about Triangl back in their early days, when their entire bikini collection consisted of only a few bright, neoprene, triangle shaped bikinis outlined in black. Well due to the thick neoprene material, if you ordered one size too big you’d get what us industry professionals like to refer to as a “diaper butt.” I ordered a S instead of an XS, and thus, had a case of the diaper butt. But instead of exchanging the suit, which sounded like a very daunting adult task to my high school self, I decided to sell it on Poshmark, the app I was using (and still use) to resell my clothing on. My mom took photos of me in the suit in our backyard to list the bikini for sale, and I ended up repurposing one of those images for my very amateur Instagram feed.

Triangl reposted the photo to their Instagram account (!!!), and as if that wasn’t already a huge enough deal, they then directly contacted me, asking if I wanted to collaborate, adding that my image had performed better than any other image they’d posted to their feed. I’d never been asked to “collaborate” with a brand before, let alone a designer bikini brand that I was a massive fan of. And that’s where it all began.

Fast forward. I went on to study design in college, and from there pursued this path I’m still on as a digital entrepreneur. As my personal brand evolved over the years, swimwear remained. It only feels natural to fuse my love of design with my love for swimwear and… DRUMROLL PLEASE… I’m so proud and excited to announce that I co-created a swimwear collection with PQ Swimwear!

When PQ Swimwear (formerly PilyQ) and I sat down together last year to discuss a design collaboration, they were already a brand I’d been wearing for years and one that had always stood out to me. Their suits have been so consistent in terms of both quality and style. You can probably imagine it can be quite limiting to design something unique with such a small piece of fabric, but PQ suits felt like they had that “it” factor to me.

So when asked if I wanted to create a collection of my own with them? It was a yes from me. We came together to reimagine an array of iconic PQ styles that resonate with me and my style. The partnership fuses PQ’s expertise in crafting gorgeous swimwear with my expertise in living in a bikini (honorable mention to my experience in social media marketing and content creation).

Speaking of content creation, I was granted free-reign and full creative control to take the collection anywhere to capture the digital assets for it, so naturally Zack and I jumped on a plane to Hawaii and brought the vision to life, just the two of us.

Just to bring this blog post up to speed here, all this all took place at the end of 2019. We launched the collection on 11/11. We sold out of half the collection on PQ’s site in the first week. In the weeks following launch, my collection was featured in: WWD, Forbes, The Zoe Report, AOL, HOLR Magazine, Popsugar, People, Marie Claire, Yahoo, The Fashion Network… Oh yeah, and I went on live local news, KTLA, to talk about the collection. Watch that here.

So yeah, it’s been a series of pinch-me moments and it’s safe to say my high school self is both screaming and proud. The collection is available here on PQ’s site, and also here and below on Revolve!!! The collection is selling fast, and sadly we won’t be restocking! If you miss this one, you’ll just have to wait for my next design venture… ;)

Without further ado, may I present “Helen Owen x PQ Swim” through the lens of Zack Kalter shot in Oahu, Hawaii, September 2019. Click on any image for the link to that suit! (On PQ’s site, the link for the top will open, just scroll down to shop the bottom too)

Helen Owen x AQUA, My Collection with Bloomingdales

Last November in New York City I nervously took a huge meeting with the incredible Bloomingdales AQUA team. Fast forward to today, I have my own capsule collection with AQUA. PINCH ME.

AQUA is a young, fun and trendy division of Bloomingdales that houses styles that I drool over daily. To get to co-create a capsule collection with them requires non-stop pinch-mes until I realize I’m not dreaming.

This collection is a mixture of my go-to styles, cuts and prints I tend to throw on in sunny destinations as well as fun, Spring-inspired styles with a sprinkle of summer and a hint of festival in there, too. I wanted the collection to not only mirror my warm weather style, but also resonate with girls who want something fun and summery but approachable to wear.

Beyond getting to sit down with the entire AQUA team at Bloomingdales to co-design and curate a collection that I loved WITH MY NAME ON IT, I also got full creative control over shooting the look book and website imagery… that meant capturing the final pieces out in the world however I imagined them best showcased.

Zack and I got to do what we LOVE doing most. We dreamt up a vision for how we could bring this collection to life with imagery and video, and then we went out there and did just that.

Zack’s Dad has spent the past year and a half restoring a 1977 Volkswagen Westfalia Camper Van that’s been in his family for over 20 years, before which they imported straight from Germany. We named her “Lucky”, by the way. After sitting dormant in a garage for years, she’s been fully revived and restored. With a brand new engine and almost all her original parts polished off or sourced and replaced, she was officially reborn and ready to roll (aside from a minor lack-of-registration issue)… and all that happened to coincide with our shoot for my AQUA collection.

After putting in our time at the DMV to get her registered to drive, we took her on her debut cruise down to Palm Springs for two days and two gigabytes of memory card magic.

Well before we embarked for the desert, I knew exactly what property I envisioned my collection being photographed around. A quaint little Mediterranean oasis tucked behind the Palm Spring’s canyons by the name of Korakia Pensione.

*Throughout this entire blog post, if you click on any look book image, the shopping link to the clothing I am wearing will open in a new tab! WOOHOO!

You’ve probably seen this dreamy bed & breakfast style hotel while scrolling Instagram and Pinterest – and let me tell you, it’s truly as charming as the photos make it seem. With a variety of unique rooms, ranging from cute little European-style suites complete with vinyl record players and kitchenettes, to larger Mediterranean or Moroccan inspired villas – Korakia is a Palm Springs property like no other you’ll find in the area.

Below are some images we captured on Korakia property for my collection with Bloomingdales. Magic.

From the iconic palm tree lined Canyon views, bocce-ball in the courtyard, a little outdoor theatre playing vintage flicks to a pool lined with fire pits, based on it’s description alone Korakia really stole my heart before I even arrived. And just as I’d imagined, it served as the most fitting backdrop to shoot so many of the looks I styled for my AQUA collection look book.

I want to throw in a huge thank you to Korakia and the wonderful staff here for being so warm, welcoming and accommodating as we ran around the property with a slew of cameras and a flurry of a zillion outfit changes. Oh, and honorable mention to the insane home-cooked daily breakfasts.

When we weren’t shooting behind every perfect nook and cranny that makes up Korakia, we spent the rest of our time driving “Lucky” (the VW Bus) around the desert and stopping along the way to capture the rest of the look book.

And hey, I think it turned out pretty great, but I’ll let the photos we took speak for themselves. Get ready to scroll, cause there are a lot. But make sure you scroll all the way to the end of this post for links to shop all the pieces in my AQUA Bloomingdales collection!

A Little Fall(ish) Fashion Look

Fall just may have been overlooked this year in LA and I’m coming to terms with it (despite some misleading clouds the day I shot this outfit, the temps still somehow reached somewhere in the high 70s). In Fall’s absence I’ve still loved putting together Fall-inspired looks that can easily be layered on top of in the case of a sudden temperature drop… which is looking unlikely.

Express launched The Edition Collection this month which is a gorgeous line comprised of beautiful, elevated designer-quality investment pieces that I have loved working into my recent looks. Zack and I had so much fun pretending the season had changed on this gloomy day on a beautiful street in West Hollywood to shoot some of my favorite Express Edition pieces styled with a few other Express accessories I have been wearing for a while! What I love most about the collection is how versatile the pieces all are and how easy a day-time look like the one I created here can be taken into the night!

Go shop the entire collection online here, or in Express stores before it’s all gone!

My Bora Bora Island Wardrobe

It was really hard not to title this blog post “My Bora Bora Wara War… drobe”. Anyway, moving on.

Putting together outfits in Bora Bora is almost as fun and breezy as the island is itself, and to be honest I didn’t really put “outfits together” in such a formal sense, I kind of just wore whatever I felt like. I wanted fun bikinis for the day time, and more loose fitting, flowing pieces for the dinner hours.

I did however make a few crucial packing mistakes, one of which was sunscreen (who am I?! WHO FORGETS SUNSCREEN?!) and the other of which was sandals… which to my defense I think I did actually pack, but stupidly left on the plane on our flight over from LA. Thus you may notice a lack of footwear in my outfits, which is due to this minor hiccup but is also conveniently overall acceptable on this island. There were worse things that could have been forgotten on that flight, such a laptop, which Zack may or may not have left himself… (He did. We miraculously located it and with the help of The Four Seasons team, had it sent over to us in Bora Bora. Crisis averted.)

*Side note, I do not recommend ditching your shoes as an intentional islandic fashion statement if you visit Bora Bora. I won’t get into details, but my feet are currently in dire need of some R&R after spending 8 days running around barefoot on extremely uneven and unbearably warm (to put it lightly) Bora Bora terrain.

But aside from those few mishaps (my skin is very verrrry dangerously tan, also not recommended as skin protection is key) I was very happy with what I packed for Bora Bora and hope you enjoy these photos we took throughout our trip! As always, I will link as many of the exact pieces I am wearing as possible at the end of and throughout this post.

Ready When You Are, Santa

Dear Santa, it’s my first time purchasing my very own Christmas tree as an adult. I heavily documented it to commemorate the occasion. I know it’s only November 30th, but I’m ready when you are.

Adulthood takeaway: Christmas trees are not cheap, and neither are Christmas decorations in general. But the feeling, *smell* and overall vibe of our apartment right now is priceless.

I knew we could get a tall tree due to having abnormally sky-high ceilings in our living room, but we didn’t have a lot of horizontal real-estate for tree placement so we needed something no wider than 35 inches in diameter. All while we were browsing through the rows of trees at our local tree farm, Zack and I were chanting “tall and skinny, tall and skinny”.

We found her, brought her home, and I volunteered myself to a Target run (much to Zack’s relief) to get our tree some bling. Contemplating keeping her all year because this is the most homey that our home has ever felt. And yes, I’m aware that you can’t preserve a real tree in your home for 12 months, but let me dream.

 srcset=  srcset=

As far as tree adornments go, I opted for a simple gold theme. If you look super closely I actually placed the ornaments in a gradient from silver at the tippy top to gold mid-way to dark crimson at the bottom. The gradient is definitley subtle in photos, so I’m thinking of getting even more crafty with it and hanging polaroids as ornaments as well to give our tree a little more pizzaz. Stay tuned for additional crafty tree decoration updates and possibly a tutorial? (I’m such a blogger now!)

 srcset=  srcset=

I didn’t even consider getting a faux tree because of a few reasons. The primary being it would eat up a lot of storage space, and also who knows if I’ll want an even taller tree next year! Or a mini one! I’d like to keep my options open for future adulthood Christmases. But above all, THE SMELL. As a highly nostalgic human who associates smells with memories, I couldn’t bring myself to get a fake tree when I grew up with the smell of pine needles every Christmas.

 srcset=  srcset=

But here’s a nifty adulthood life hack for ya: if you want your house / apartment / dorm room / studio to smell like Christmas without having a real tree, I happened upon the most perfect combination of candle scents by my all-time favorite candle brand, Voluspa that’ll do the trick. After years of important candle research (I’ve been buying these candles since college!) I can say with confidence that together these candles are the perrrrrfect Christmas combo. You’re welcome. (Exact candles will be linked along with my outfit details at the bottom of the post!)

 srcset=  srcset=

Okay and last thing – can we talk about these boots? I found them at Nordstrom and they’re now my designated holiday boots. Okay, that’s all I needed to say. Thank you for reading, and see ya in the next one!

My Morocco Outfits

Choosing outfits for a trip to Morocco of all places seams like a daunting task, as if packing for a trip isn’t already enough work. Luckily for me, going on this Moroccan adventure with Revolve made selecting outfits FUN and comparatively easy (the thought of going through my own closet seems borderline depressing when compared with going through the vast array of incredible outfit options that is Revolve.)

So… what to wear in Morocco? If I wasn’t going with Revolve, this would have been an enormous dilemma. Morocco is a Muslim country, and strutting around the streets in your vintage Levi cut-offs and crop top like you’re walking down Melrose isn’t going to go over so well. However, our itinerary in Morocco and every single activity we had planned for our week was private (except for shopping, which we dressed accordingly for). And being that I was dressing and shooting in Revolve’s incredible brands, I curated looks that I felt fully comfortable in and that fit my style, but wouldn’t necessarily wear in Morocco’s more public places.

I tried to select pieces that I felt reflected my surroundings (or what I thought that would look like) and tried to keep everything within the context of gorgeous Morocco and the beautiful 80 degree sunny weather we were blessed with daily. If you plan a trip to Morocco and you’re wondering what your wardrobe should consist of, I’d air on the side of modesty but bring some fun dresses for wearing around your hotel and any private tours or activities you may plan.

In The Maldives with Faithfull The Brand

The Maldivian islands have always been an imaginary destination that I used to tell myself I wouldn’t believe was true until I saw it for myself. Since the beginning of our month-long excursion in Thailand, Zack and I have had The Maldives on our minds.

We tried passionately to tack a quick Maldives stop on at the end of our time in Thailand in late March, but quickly learned that Maldives is not a “quick stop”, and it’s definitely not a casual weekend getaway in the month of March or April, which is typically high season in the Maldives (honeymooners galore).

Back in Los Angeles and even more determined than we were before, we set about to plan a Maldives trip. We made it happen, and witnessed it for ourselves. It’s not an imaginary place. Let these photos be evidence.

Our experience was an 8-day long whirlwind of mid-May Maldivian paradise.

If you’ve looked into the Maldives as a travel destination, you’ve probably come across the term “monsoon season” that’s typically assigned to the months May through October. It sounds much more daunting that it was in our experience – we found it to be a preferable time to travel simply due to the fact that both the islands we visited weren’t packed with people as we’d expected. The few times it did pour with warm tropical rain you could find us either splashing around in the ocean or snorkeling with the fish.

We broke up our stay into two chapters, with 3 nights on an island in the Southern region of the Maldives, and then 4 nights up on the Northern side. If you aren’t flying over this area of the Indian Ocean (or scrolling over it on Google Earth, much less magical) then you might not understand just how many little islands are scattered around. Choosing which island to visit is like being in a small ice cream parlor with 1,190 flavors to choose from, all of which look incredible.

Being that our trip fell at the end of high season and on the brink of more unpredictable weather – a friendly way of describing “monsoon season” – we basically had all 1,190 flavors to choose from. After much research and deliberation (as well as help from our friends at The Luxe Nomad) we decided on Six Senses Laamu, a resort down on the Southern Laamu atoll of the Maldives (an “atoll” is a set of islands and reefs made up of coral – the Maldives is divided into 26 atolls) followed by Dusit Thani, a resort in the Baa Atoll closer to the top.

Our experience of The Maldives was greatly shaped by the resorts we stayed at, as it seems most of these smaller islands are actually entire resorts / package experiences as opposed to island cities you can freely visit. To get to almost any of these tiny paradises is not a simple hop, skip and a jump either.

We first flew into the larger skyscraper-dense island and capital of the Maldives, Male, which houses the international airport as well as a launching point for the rest of the more remote destinations in the Maldives. From Male, we had the enchanting experience of flying down over the clusters of atolls that make up the Maldives to a domestic airport in the Southern Laamu region, and from there we took a boat ride to the actual island. This plane + boat transfer sequence was repeated for getting to Dusit Thani, so I suspect it’s the same for almost any island in the Maldives that you might choose to visit.

Our first impression of the Maldives rendered us entirely speechless. I wish I had a video recorded of our initial reaction because to describe in words how surreal the Maldives is would be much easier by showing you the expressions on our faces when we first arrived.

Rather than explaining in detail every magical moment of our trip, I’ll let the photos speak for themselves. Some of the highlights for me were eating fresh tropical fruits on our back deck which was sitting atop the bluest, clearest ocean I’ve ever encountered, as well as biking around the docks and islands barefoot (most of Maldives seems to have a “no-shoe” policy much to my delight as it really simplified outfit planning).

On both islands I was almost always frolicking around in light, flowing Faithfull the Brand pieces thrown over a bikini. The atmosphere of the Maldives plus the free flowing fabrics of these pieces were a match made in heaven – you’ll have to try it for yourself, but it truly felt like these beautiful pieces were designed with island living in mind.

All in all, we clearly had a pretty incredible glimpse into the desktop-screensaver-imaginary paradise that is the cluster of 1,190 little mini paradises that is the Maldives. There are quite a few flavors yet to taste, so I have a feeling we’ll be back.
